Arthroscopic surgery in India is possible across the country. Many of the most advanced medical facilities in the world exist outside of the United States, with specific programs carefully designed to attract international travelers such as Nigerian citizens. In fact, hospitals like Wockhardt, Ruby Fortis and Apollo have spent the last decade preparing for the explosive growth of medical tourism, specifically adhering to the same high standards that we in the United States have come to trust. Why do people want to travel half way around the world to undergo medical procedures? The answer is simple, Affordable healthcare, not to mention a little bit of leisure and peaceful recuperation in complete anonymity. India has now become a great destination for treatment abroad because of the significantly lower currency exchange rate and this equates to Incredible Savings. Arthroscopic surgery can be done in India at Low cost.

What is Arthroscopic Surgery?

Arthroscopic surgery consists of viewing a joint with a small camera inserted through an incision in the skin. Arthroscopy is most commonly performed on the knee joint, but it can also be used on the wrist, ankle, shoulder, or hip. Arthroscopic surgery is a common orthopedic procedure that is used to diagnose and treat problems in joints. The word “arthroscopy” comes from two Greek words: ‘arthro,’ meaning “joint,” and ’scope,’ meaning “look.” Simply put, arthroscopic surgery is a means to look inside a joint. But arthroscopy is much more than that!

Types of Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopic surgery could potentially be performed on any joint, and as time passes, more and more different joints are being arthroscopically treated. Common types of arthroscopic surgery include:

Ø Knee Arthroscopy

Ø Shoulder Arthroscopy

Ø Hip Arthroscopy

Ø Ankle Arthroscopy

Ø Elbow Arthroscopy

Ø Wrist Arthroscopy

When Needed:

Arthroscopy surgery may be recommended for joint injury pain, and joint pain problems, such as:Torn meniscus (either repair or remove)
Mild arthritis Loose bodies (small pieces of broken cartilage) in the knee joint, ankle joint, shoulder joint, hip joint etc. A torn or damaged anterior cruciate or posterior cruciate ligament
Inflamed or damaged lining of the joint (synovium)
Misalignment of the knee cap (patella).

Arthroscopy Surgery Procedure

When an Arthroscopy is performed, a camera is inserted into the joint through a small incision (about one centimeter). The arthroscopic surgery camera is attached to a fiberoptic light source and shows a picture of the inside of the joint on a television monitor. The surgeon uses fluid pumped through the joint to aid in visibility and clear debris from the joint. One or more other incisions are made to insert instruments that can treat a variety of conditions. For example, a shaver can be inserted to trim torn cartilage from a joint.

Risks of Arthroscopic Surgery

The risks of Arthroscopic surgery are much less than open surgery, but they are not nonexistent. The risk of any surgery carries with it danger in the use of anesthesia, including heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia, and blood clots. The risks are rare, but they increase with the age of the patient. Blood clots are the most common dangers, but they occur infrequently in arthroscopic surgery. Other risks include infections at the surgery site or at the skin level, bleeding, and skin scars.

Elbow Replacement In India

Elbow replacement involves surgically replacing bones that make up the elbow joint with artificial elbow joint parts (prosthetic components). The artificial joint consists of two stems made of high-quality metal. They are joined together with a metal and plastic hinge that allows the artificial elbow joint to bend. The artificial joints come in different sizes to fit the patient.

The elbow is a hinge joint consisting of three bones. The upper part of the hinge is at the end of the upper arm bone (humerus), and the lower part of the hinge is at the top of the two forearm bones (radius and ulna) which are side by side. When the elbow is bent, the ends of the two forearm bones rub against the end of the humerus.

Anatomy

How does the elbow joint work?

The elbow joint is made up of three bones the humerus bone of the upper arm, and the ulna and radius bones of the forearm.

The ulna and the humerus meet at the elbow and form a hinge. This hinge allows the arm to straighten and bend. The large triceps muscle in the back of the arm attaches to the point of the ulna (the olecranon). When this muscle contracts, it straightens out the elbow. The biceps muscles in the front of the arm contracts to bend the elbow.

Inside the elbow joint, the bones are covered with articular cartilage. Articular cartilage is a slick, smooth material. It protects the bone ends from friction when they rub together as the elbow moves. Articular cartilage is soft enough to act as a shock absorber. It is also tough enough to last a lifetime, if it is not injured.

The connection of the radius to the humerus allows rotation of the forearm. The upper end of the radius is round. This round end turns against the ulna and the humerus as the forearm and hand turn from palm down (pronation) to palm up supination).

Indications

Your physician may determine that an elbow replacement is appropriate if you have one or more of the following conditions:

1. Bone injury or bone loss contributing to elbow instability
2. Abnormal stiffness, immobility, and consolidation of the elbow joint (ankylosis)
3. Painful deterioration of the elbow joint cartilage (osteoarthritis)
4. Painful inflammation in the lining of the elbow joint (rheumatoid arthritis)
5. Arthritis resulting from physical injury to the elbow joint (traumatic arthritis)
6. Elbow joint instability or loss of motion, which cannot be satisfactorily addressed by more conservative treatment options
7. A previous elbow joint replacement, which has worn or failed.

Total Elbow Replacement Surgery

Painful and unstable elbow joints frequently limit or prohibit successful use of a normal hand in activities of daily living. Semi-constrained elbow replacement is an alternative to elbow fusion.

This surgical procedure is suited for active people who agree not to hammer, use pneumatic tools and try to avoid any activity that might cause a fracture in a normal elbow due to a fall, such as unprotected roller blading or skate boarding.

Candidates are people with severe deterioration due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or the metabolic arthritides in one or both elbows, or in the non-dominant elbows of someone who must perform extreme activities in his or her profession. In the case where one of the arthritic elbows has been previously infected and is not a candidate for joint replacement, the uninfected elbow may be replaced while the only option for the infected elbow is fusion.

Elbow Fusion

A fusion surgery (also called arthrodesis) eliminates pain by making the bones of the joint grow together, or fuse, into one solid bone. Fusions were very common before the invention of artificial joints. Even today, joint fusions are commonly used in many different joints to get rid of the pain of arthritis.

An elbow fusion will greatly decrease the motion in your arm. However, it does leave you with a strong and pain-free elbow. People who need a good range of motion in their elbow should consider another type of operation, such as an elbow joint replacement.

After Surgery

Your elbow will be bandaged with a well-padded dressing and an elbow splint for support. Physical or occupational therapy sessions may be needed for up to three months after surgery. The first few treatment sessions will focus on controlling the pain and swelling from surgery. You will then begin to do exercises that help strengthen and stabilize the muscles around the elbow joint. Your therapist will give you tips on ways to do your activities without straining your elbow.

Amputation -Above Knee Surgery In India

Overview

Q. What is it?

There is not enough blood getting down your leg to keep it alive. The lack of blood causes severe pain and allows serious infection to take hold. If left untreated, the leg will eventually get necrotic (will become dead) and become life threatening. The only choice is to remove the damaged part. This must be done high enough up the leg to an area that has a good blood supply to get proper healing of the stump. In your case it means an amputation through the thigh…

Types of amputation include : -

leg amputation of digits partial foot amputation (Chopart, Lisfranc, Ray) ankle disarticulation (Syme,[1] Pyrogoff) below-knee amputation (transtibial e.g. Burgess, Kingsley Robinson) knee-bearing amputation (knee disarticulation, e.g. Gritti or Gritti-Stokes) above knee amputation (transfemoral) Van-ness rotation/rotationplasty (Foot being turned around and reattached to allow the ankle joint to be used as a knee.) hip disarticulation hemipelvectomy/hindquarter amputation arm amputation of digits metacarpal amputation wrist disarticulation forearm amputation (transradial) elbow disarticulation above-elbow amputation (transhumeral) shoulder disarticulation and forequarter amputation Krukenberg procedure teeth..

Symptoms

Amputation of a limb or limbs will affect people in different ways. It is a very personal loss and in many patients can feel like a bereavement. The emotional loss can be like losing a relative and it will take time to adapt to such a loss. Physically your body will be permanently altered and can affect all areas of your life. How much your amputation affects your life will to some degree depend on the extent of your physical recovery…

Tendinitis can come in many forms and at many joints. “Golfers elbow” (medial epicondylitis) and “Tennis elbow” (lateral epicondylitis) are examples of tendonitis or tendinosis at the medial and lateral elbow respectively. Both are usually from overuse. Golfers’ elbow named so from people overstressing the flexor muscles in your forearm, such as from a golf swing and tennis elbow named so from overstressing the zextensor muscles in your elbow, such as from a backhand. Although, you should know that it is definitely not only tennis players and golfers who end up with either of these issues. It is also common in painters, carpenters, plumbers and really anyone who does repetitive movements with their hand, wrist or arm. Tendinitis in the knee is also common in people who do a lot of jumping or a lot of squatting or stair climbing, causing tendonitis or tendinosis in the patella tendon of the knee.

When you over-stress a muscle, you end up over-stressing the tendon that attaches that muscle to the bone. When this happens over time that muscle gets tight and continues to stress and pull at that tendon’s attachment to the bone. At first you can get acute inflammation in that tendon (tendinitis), however since usually we don’t immediately stop the action when we start to feel the discomfort, over time this can develop into chronic inflammation and scar tissue can begin to build up in this area (tendinosis).

With any type of overuse or repetitive injury typically you will begin to feel pain right at that area when you activate that muscle or stress that tendon, you may also have pain when you stretch that muscle or tendon, and it is also usually tender to touch or massage. With medial and lateral epicondylitis it is also common to have pain with gripping and twisting objects.

So what do you do about it? If you catch it early enough, the first and most important thing to do is to stop aggravating it…. Rest! Avoid whatever activities seem to annoy it, whether its tennis, golf, typing, squatting, going up and down stairs or just a certain way you reach over and over again at work. You need to rest that muscle or tendon. Along with resting it you can massage right over the muscles and tendons every day, which can help to loosen the muscle and massaging over the tendon can help to break up any scar tissue or adhesions that have formed. After this you should ice the area. An ice pack will work, or an even better way to control it is to do an ice massage to that area. (Fill a paper Dixie cup with water and freeze it, then you can massage the ice over that area for 1-2 minutes, or whatever you can tolerate). It is important to decrease the inflammation. If ice and rest do not work on their own, then a NSAID may help such as ibuprofen.

It is also important to gently stretch that muscle. (Gently stretch that muscle and hold it for 10-15 seconds; Repeat 5-10x depending on discomfort level). For those with golfers’ or tennis elbow, remember that it is actually an overuse injury to your wrist muscles, which are in your forearm. So it is important to stretch your wrist, versus your elbow. You can follow the link for pictures and specific directions for these stretches.

You may also have seen the straps people wear for tendinitis. Most commonly they are worn for lateral epicondylitis or “tennis elbow” and for patella tendinitis. These straps do provide relief for many people by changing the stress on the tendon and taking some pressure of the muscle and tendon, especially when they are trying to return to the sport or activity that originally caused the inflammation.

If the pain persists you should see your primary care or orthopedic doctor. Physical therapy can be a great help as they have modalities that can decrease the inflammation such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation and iontophoresis. A physical therapist will also typically perform some massage and stretching to the appropriate area and teach you the proper way to stretch the area on your own. Your doctor may also recommend a prescription anti-inflammatory medication or cortisone shot.

The elbow is the region surrounding the elbow-joint and it is in the middle of the arm. Elbows are joints just like knees and their function is to rotate, flex and support the body weight when needed. Excessive pressure, continuous action and aging can hurt the elbows and knees. When too much strain is put on them or when they are leaned upon, they will hurt. Most common cases of elbow pain are golfer elbow, tennis elbow and bursitis.

Golfer’s Elbow

If the pain radiates from different area of the elbow and it is felt on and around the bony area extending through the flexor muscle below the arm, it is called golfer’s elbow and it is little similar to tennis elbow.

Force exerted on the flexor muscles during a golf swing pulls the tendons. When the wrist is flexed or the hand is made to grip, the muscles are pulled against the tendons. Excessive use of those muscles from continuous golf or tennis swings results in pain and inflammation around the elbow joint.

Tennis Elbow

If pain is felt and it starts from the outer side of the upper forearm just under the bend of the elbow radiating down towards the wrist, this means that the person is suffering from tennis elbow. This pain is mostly felt bending or lifting the arm when even grasping light objects like a tea cup.

This name has been given because playing tennis often results to this kind of elbow pain. This pain is not limited only to tennis players. The sport requires continuous rotation and flexing of the arm from shoulder to wrist. These movements can cause little tears in parts of the muscle and tendon. When the first tear has healed, it often tears again and continuous tearing results in the bleeding of the muscle. Rough tissue and calcium deposits are formed and a protein named collagen leaks out from around the injured areas causing inflammation. The pressure of the swelling cuts off the flow of the blood pinching the radial nerve which is one of the main nerves that controls the muscles in the hand and arm.

There is difficulty extending the forearm fully because of the inflamed ligaments, muscles and tendons. This inflammation can continue typically for 6 to 12 weeks. Although tendons do not receive the same amount of blood and oxygen that muscles do but they heal more slowly. Due to this slow healing process, the pain can last for as less as 3 weeks and can continue for several years.

Tennis elbow can be a type of tendonitis that is mostly the case. If the bones and muscles of the elbow joint are also involved, it is called epicondylitis. Although swelling in never a symptom of tennis elbow but if there is swelling, other possible conditions have to be checked like infection, arthritis, tumor or gout.

Bursitis

If pain is felt directly on the back of the elbow joint rather than below the outside of the arm, then this is the sign of bursitis. This is caused by the inflammation of lubricating sacs in the joint. Constant rubbing of the tendon over the bone along with high amounts of repetitive shoulder, arm, hip, knee and ankle causes this pain.

Treatments for Elbow Pain

One can have a quick relief by doing the following like; giving the arm a rest till the pain disappears and then massaging the area for relieving the tension and stress in the muscles. Do exercise to strengthen the area for preventing any further injury. If it has to be remembered what was being done, that caused the injury, one must not forget to warm up for at least ten minutes with gentle stretching before starting any activity. Frequent breaks must not be forgotten.

Assortment of treatments for elbow pain is offered in conventional medicines. They range from drug injections to surgery but the pain will never completely finish unless one stops stressing the joint. The muscles and tendons can get damaged and the pain can further worsen without adequate rest.
